This was the South China Morning Post’s live coverage of the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards (Mama).
The ceremony was broadcast live from South Korea with a virtual audience because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Among the K-pop acts up for awards on the night were BTS, NCT, Mamamoo, Taemin, Monsta X, Oh My Girl, Ateez, Twice, Seventeen and many, many more. This year’s Mamas were hosted by none other than Song Joong-ki and was a night full of big wins and even bigger performances.

The awards ceremony is not expected to begin until 6pm in South Korea (5pm Hong Kong time), but the red carpet is already well under way. Among the acts that have already turned up are (G)I-DLE and Enhypen.

Red carpet event kicks off

Enhypen, who released their debut song Given-Taken on November 30, are one of the acts to perform tonight.
But who are Enhypen, the new K-pop group from BTS’s label, and how have they become one of the world’s most popular K-pop groups already?

Though the night is set to be a good one for many of the acts, fans might be left wondering if (with the rise of cases in Seoul) enough precautions are in place for the artists at the event.
Companies have rapidly adapted to the new normal, with concerts moving online and television shows filmed without live audiences, but it’s becoming more likely the tight-knit K-pop industry will face an outbreak unless more rigid precautions are put into place, at least until the current wave passes.


Caution as Covid-19 cases rise?

Among the performances to look forward to tonight is one from K-pop veteran BoA.
Since arriving on the South Korean pop scene at 13 years old in August, 2000, with the album “ID; Peace B”, the now-34-year-old has earned a reputation as one of the forerunners of modern K-pop.
Will she perform a track from her newest album, “Better”, or will she bring back an older fan favourite?

Actor Song Joong-ki opens this year’s awards, which has no in-person audience.

This year's theme is “New-topia” and is being conducted in line with South Korea’s Covid-19 guidelines.

The first award for Best New Male Artist is presented by actors Byeon Woo-seok and Hwang In-yeop to Treasure. The new group from YG Entertainment debuted earlier this year with their single Boy in August.

The Best New Female Artist award was also presented by Byeon and Hwang, who named rookie girl group Weeekly as the rising stars of 2020. The girl group released their first EP “We Are in June” and a second in October, titled “We Can”.

Weeekly wins Best New Female Artist award

Enhypen makes their Mama debut with their recently released first single Given-Taken, and pro skater-turned-K-pop idol Sunghoon fronts the performance with a captivating ice dance.

BTS win their first award of the night, taking home the Best Dance Performance from a Male Group for Dynamite, presented by Bae Jung-nam and Lee Sun-bin. The members took the stage in masks to thank their fans, with Jimin giving the acceptance speech. BTS gave a shout out to missing member Suga, who is recovering from a recent injury.

The Best Dance Performance for a solo artist was also presented by Bae and Lee, who gave Hwasa the win for her song Maria. Mama shared cover performances by fans of each nominee before presenting the award, bringing the fans into the socially-distanced event.
Bae and Lee also announced the Discovery of the Year award, recognising rising stars Ateez.

Best Dance Performance for a solo artist goes to Hwasa

Monsta X and rookie label mates Cravity performed the “Heaven X Hell” set, with the latter performing their song Break All The Rules before Monsta X took the stage with their single Beast Mode. Cravity then performed Monsta X's songs Dramarama and Shoot Out, before Monsta X returned to stage to perform their own recent single Love Killa.
Meanwhile, fans online are applauding the decision by BTS to observe strict Covid-19 protocols.

Monsta X and Cravity take to the stage

Best Band Performance was presented to Day6 for their song Zombie. The award was presented by actor Lee Do-hyeon and actress Ko Bo-gyeol.
Lee and Ko also presented the Favourite Dance Performance for a female soloist to Jessi for Nunu Nana. During her acceptance speech, Jessi mentioned her family in the US and also gave a shout out to her label head, Psy.



Day6 win Best Band Performance

Oh My Girl arrived to perform a set dubbed “Total Eclipse”. They kicked it off with their song Nonstop, after which (G)I-DLE performed their song Dumdi Dumdi. They then collab’d on a cover of miss A's 2010 hit debut song Bad Girl Good Girl.

It’s not all music awards...

Actor Joo Woo-jae and actress Lee Yu-bi charmingly presented the Best Up Next award to rising rookies Cravity. The group accepted their award in masks, and were one of many groups to give multilingual thanks - during which they expressed hopes for everyone to remain healthy.
Lee and Joo gave the Best Vocal Performance for a Group award to Mamamoo for their sassy song, Hip. The quartet arrived on stage harmonizing their intro, and thanked fans in a multitude of languages.


Cravity win Best Up Next, Best Vocal Performance goes to Mamamoo

A stage dubbed “Qui Fert Pondus Coronae Velit” featured Ateez, The Boyz and Stray Kids performing their own songs and coming together for a special collab stage. The Boyz won the show The Road to Kingdom earlier this year, and performed a medley while donning classical European regalia.
Ateez took a darker interpretation to their rock remix medley of a kingly performance, appearing more warlike in black in comparison to the brighter, more peaceful performance put on by The Boyz.
Stray Kids were the final group to perform in the special set with a dramatic, militaristic rendition of Victory Song, after which members of the the three groups took the stage and battled it out with intense choreography. The set led into an announcement that Mnet would be airing the show Kingdom soon. Stray Kids, Ateez, and The Boyz are the first three groups set to appear on Kingdom, a follow up to last year's widely popular show Queendom.

The Album of the Year Award, the first of MAMA’s four Grand Awards was presented by English actor and host James Corden. Via a pre-recorded video, he presented BTS the award for their seventh-year anniversary album “Map of the Soul: 7”, which was released in February. So that the group could accept the award as seven, Jimin held up his mic to a phone so that Suga could give the acceptance speech, even while recovering from his surgery.

Best Best Original Soundtrack (OST) went to Gaho’s “Start Over” from Korean drama Itaewon Class, and then Best Female Artist Award, Best Vocal Performance Solo and Best Collaboration all went to various songs by IU, who sent in a video acceptance video.

Gaho wins Best Original Soundtrack, IU picks up hat-trick of awards

The Best Asian Artist for Japan went to Official Hige Dandism, while G.E.M won the Best Asian Artist Mandarin. Ink Waruntorn won Best Asian Artist Thailand, while Best Asian Artist Indonesia went to Rizky Febian.

Best Asian Artist Vietnam went to Binz, Best New Asian Artist Japan went to Fujii Kaze, and Best New Asian Artist Mandarin went to Chih Siou. Milli won Best New Asian Artist Thailand went to Milli.
Tiara Andini won Best New Asian Artist Indonesia and the Best New Asian Artist Vietnam award was given to Amee.
Each artist spoke about their “New-topia”.

JO1 won the Best New Asian Artist award, and promptly performed a medley of their songs under the performance theme “Infinite Light”.

Choi Soo-young, an actress and member of Girls’ Generation, and Gong Myoung, who happens to be the brother of NCT’s Doyoung, announced NCT as the first of 10 Top Worldwide Fans’ Choice Artists that were voted on by fans from across the world. The Top 10 Worldwide Fans’ Choice awards were chosen by fans from across the globe during Mama’s voting period, that ended during the award show.
The Top Five voting countries came from Japan, the US, the Philippines, Indonesia and South Korea.
The 23 members of NCT appeared on stage together, and several members gave acceptance speeches in Korean (Doyoung and Taeyong), English (Johnny), Mandarin (Kun), and Japanese (Yuta).

First Top 10 Worldwide Fans’ Choice award goes to NCT

The next Worldwide Fans’ Choice award went to Treasure, who energetically accepted the award as members jumped up and down and waved excitedly towards the cameras as they thanked fans in Korean and Japanese.
Tomorrow X Together was the third winner of the Worldwide Fans’ Choice award, and the quintet arrived on stage in dashing suits to express their thanks.

The Top 10 countdown halted momentarily as Treasure took the stage for their "Find your Treasure" performance, during which they performed a medley of the songs they released this year since their debut in August.



Time to take a breather...

Actors Yoo Yeon-seok and Jung Kyung-ho presented the first of the next bunch of Worldwide Fans' Choice awards to Got7. The septet released their new album “Breath of Love: Last Piece” last week, fronted by the songs Breathe and Last Piece. JB accepted the award in Korean, while BamBam thanked fans in Thai, and Jackson in Mandarin and Mark in English.

The next Worldwide Fans' Choice award went to Ateez, who took the stage and thanked fans in Korean, and made sure to give a shout out to missing member Mingi, who is currently taking a break for his mental health.
Seventeen was the next group to win a Worldwide Fans' Choice award, and the 13 members of the group took to the stage for the first time of the night to celebrate their win and thank their fandom, Carat, in Korean, Mandarin and English, adding that they hope everyone stays safe amid the pandemic.

Tomorrow X Together, aka TXT, then arrived on stage to perform a disco-inspired medley of their songs, and also performed a cover of labelmates BTS’s Dynamite.

Actresses Lee Da-hee and Lim Soo-jung arrived to present the next batches of awards, announcing Mamamoo as the first female winner of the 2020 Worldwide Fans' Choice award. The act recently released their new EP “Traveler” in November, fronted by the singles Dingga and Aya.

Twice are the next act to be named Worldwide Fans’ Choice, with the nonet garnering the award after releasing Korean hits More & More and I Can't Stop Me this year along with several Japanese singles.

To accept the award, the members appeared on stage for the first time that night and expressed hopes that fans would stay safe, and made sure to mention Jeongyeon, who is on hiatus.
Several members, namely Jihyo (Korean), Tzuyu (Mandarin), and Dahyun (Japanese), shared the acts’ feelings.

The next Worldwide Fans’ Choice to be named was BTS, making it their third award of the night along with Best Album and Best Dance Performance.

IZ*One appeared next on stage to perform a medley of their singles, beginning with units of the larger 12-member group performing La Vie En Rose, Violeta, and Fiesta before all coming together to perform their most recent single, Secret Story of the Swan, with a quick, technology-aided, outfit swap that saw them all rapidly don fluttering white looks.
Their set ended with the first-ever performance of their latest single, Panorama.

Best Stage was presented by actor Yang Kyung-won and actress Park Ha-seon to Monsta X.
The Favourite Dance Performance award was also presented by Yang and Park, who announced the title had gone to TXT.

Got7 was the next group to take the stage, putting on a “New-topia”-themed performance in line with the night's theme that featured their songs Not By the Moon and Last Piece.

Kim Ji-suk and Lim Soo-hyang arrived to present BTS their fourth award of the night, Best Music Video for Dynamite.

Kim and Lim then returned to give WayV, the Chinese team associated with NCT, the Favourite Asian Artist award. WayV is the first NCT team to win a solo award at the 2020 Mama awards. Kun gave a speech in Mandarin while Yangyang followed in English, Ten in Thai, and Lucas in Korean. Each expressed the act’s gratitude and hopes that people around the world stay safe amid the pandemic.

Seventeen are the next group to perform a bright medley of their songs, beginning with Left & Right and leading into a big band version of Home Run.

The Worldwide Icon of the Year award, considered one of Mama’s top awards of the night and chosen by global audiences, was presented to BTS by actor Park Seo-jun, who starred in recent hit K-drama Itaewon Class. It was their fifth group award of the 2020 Mama show, while Suga also received an award for his collab Eight with IU.
RM gave an acceptance speech in English, musing on the smallness of the music world and how music connects people together. He thanked the BTS fandom Army, and hoped everyone can stay safe, while other members also added “borahae”, or “I purple you” - BTS and Army's special phrase that means “I love you”.

The Best Male Artist award has gone to EXO member Baekhyun, who sent an acceptance speech in via video.
The Best Hip Hop and Urban Music award went to Zico for his hit Any Song, one of the most popular songs in South Korea this year.
Blackpink was named the Best Female Group, as well as the Best Dance Performance for a Female Group.

Among the industry awards, Best Executive Producer of the Year award went to Bang Si-hyuk while Pdogg, BTS’s primary producer, was named the Best Producer of the Year. The best Composer of the Year is Yovie Widianto, while the Best Engineer of the Year award was shared between Gu Jong-pil and Kwon Namoo.
The Best Video Director of the Year award went to Lumpens, while Best Choreographer of the Year award went to Quang Dang.
The Best Art Director of the Year award went to Mu:E.


Industry awards handed out

The third hour of 2020 Mama began with NCT’s “Resonance of Mama” section, which kicked off with a rearranged version of ballad From Home.
Next up was a series of NCT unit performances, which started with WayV performing their single Turn Back Time.
The youthful NCT Dream arrived next, looking like hip bikers as they performed Ridin’ in leather jackets and studs galore.
The intensity of NCT 127 arrived with a dynamic performance of Kick It, before everything led into the dramatic first performance of 23-member song Resonance.

Song Joong-ki returned to the stage to share the 2020 Visionary awards to industry individuals who helped spread K-content over the past year to BTS, Blackpink, K-drama screenwriter Park Ji-eun, Parasite director Bong Joon-ho, Rain for going viral as a meme with his song Gang, television producer Kim Tae-ho, television personality Yoo Jae-suk, Kingdom screenwriter Kim Eun-hee, Parasite actor Kang Ho-son, Hospital Playlist producer Shin Won-ho.

Actor Yoon Bak and actress Kang Han-na also presented the Best Dance Performance from a Male Soloist to Taemin for his song Criminal.

The Global Favourite Performer title was given to Seventeen, who released numerous singles this year and sold millions of albums.
The members of the group expressed thanks for the award in multiple languages, and shared hopes that they’ll be able to see fans face-to-face once soon.

Twice took to the stage with a set subtitled “Paradise, Lost”, kicking things off with fluttering fan dances and ribbon waving before sharing Garden of Eden themed performances of More & More and I Can't Stop Me. They closed out with a black-and-white themed performance of Cry For Me.

Actor Jung Moon-sung and actress Jeon Mi-do presented the Best Male Group award to BTS, their sixth group award of the night.

Aespa’s Winter arrived to perform a surprise performance of ID; Peace B, the beginning of a series of performances inspired by BoA’s twenty-year career.
(G)I-DLE then performed Listen to My Heart, followed by YooA of Oh My Girl performing Tree, and IZ*One covered Atlantis Princess.

After the covers, BoA arrived after being announced as the Queen of K-pop to perform No. 1 before being joined by Taemin to dance to Only One together. She then performed her new single, Better.

BTS arrive to close out the night with an ethereal performance dubbed “On & On”, featuring intense CGI, a marching band, and costuming ahead of a medley of some of their biggest songs kicking off with ON. The group went from the stadium performance of ON to a rainbow tunnel wonderland to perform Dynamite.
