The 10th annual Gaon Chart Music Awards, held on Wednesday in Seoul, looked a bit different from other South Korean award shows, opting out of any in-person awards or performances as the country battles its worst coronavirus spike to date.

The show marked the 10th year since the South Korean Gaon Charts were launched, with the aim of being the country’s chart-tracking organisation. The annual event recognises the success of artists throughout the year based on impact, both digital and physical sales, and streaming.

The Wednesday night event was hosted by Super Junior’s Leeteuk and Itzy’s Lia, who were joined on a panel by singer-songwriter Joo Young-hoon and media personality JaeJae.

The awards intercut live and pre-recorded content to reveal the biggest releases of last year, with artists and industry professionals appearing over video calls to express their gratitude and the recognition.

BTS, Exo’s Baekhyun and Seventeen were named the artists of the year for physical album sales. BTS’ Map of the Soul: 7 and BE were the bestselling albums of the first and fourth quarters.
