Hong Kong’s best kept secrets: where to get a classic wet shave

London-style barber delivers beard trims, straight razor shaves, meticulous service and even a complimentary gin and tonic to see you on your way

Hair salons are for ladies; men go to barbers. At least that’s how Western society has always dictated it. But in Hong Kong (and many parts of Asia), that line is blurred, if not downright non-existent. Most, if not all, young Hong Kong Chinese get their trims and styling at salons, leaving Chinese barbers to older Hongkongers who’ve long settled into that I-don’t-really-care-to-be-trendy stage of domestic life.

As a result, a proper barber can be hard to find. The newly opened Fox and the Barber hopes to fill that void. Located in the heart of SoHo in Central, tit is small but designed to resemble classic barbers of London, with minimalistic white tiles and ’40s European light fixtures.

Owner Sarah McGlynn – also one of the barbers – says she wanted the shop to resemble a down-to-earth neighbourhood shop, and she and her team’s impeccable service – attentive without being intrusive – certainly gives off the vibe.

Haircut services offered include a dry cut (HK$520), wet cut (HK$560) and clipper cut (HK$260 or HK$420, depending on the type of fade). The cuts are done by either McGlynn or Alf Rewin, both experienced barbers and hair stylists, having worked in England and Hong Kong for years.

But the real reason to go  is for the Classic Shave (30 minutes, costs HK$440), or if you want to splash out on a true pampering session, the luxurious 45-minute Penhaligon’s Shave (HK$720) – both with straight razor. The latter includes exfoliating cream, numerous types of facial oils, all from the cult London brand, hot and cold towels and a soothing massage around your head and eyes. You’ll even be offered a complimentary gin and tonic to refresh you before you leave.

It’s a classy but not pretentious place, designed to offer the full gentlemen’s grooming service.

Fox and the Barber is at 41-43 Graham Street, Central, tel: 2405 6880 (foxandthebarber.com)
