Hong Kong’s best kept secrets: a Volkswagen hippie van for hire

The Kombi can be configured and rented out as a DJ booth, wedding altar, food truck, cocktail bar or whatever you dream up

Making your birthday, wedding, hen night (enter excuse for a party here) stand out from the fun crowd can be difficult.

Enter The Kombi.

Available for hire in Hong Kong, this 1976 VW Kombi Van Type 2 is a design classic and while it has had a number of names – Transporter, Kombi and Camper among them – for most of us it’s known as the “Hippie van”, from the colourful and psychedelic symbol of freedom, weed and free love that perfectly summed up the counterculture movement of the ’60s.

While the van looks retro, it has been modified to include a few mod cons including opening hatch roof, fold-out countertops and a built-in generator capable of providing 5,300 watts of power; much-needed when a DJ is in the house – or van – spinning your favourite tunes.

Make The Kombi your own food truck for a day.
“Let your imagination run wild,” says Karen Hui, a vintage car lover who came across The Kombi while travelling two years ago. “From a DJ bus, lighting installation, wedding altar, your very own food truck, a cocktail bar or even a candy wonderland for the little ones … the possibilities are endless.”

Prices vary depending on whether you want it static or mobile, and the cost goes up if you need custom fixtures (they can fit out the interior to suit a range of uses). Production, light and sound equipment is also available for rent. For more details, visit kombi.hk
