Big data has solved the frugal traveller’s dilemma of when to book a flight from Hong Kong to get the best price.

On average, the best time to book is 18 weeks in advance, according to results of a survey of 250 million flight prices over the past three years.

But not all flights are cheapest 18 weeks in advance. Getting a saving of 11.5 per cent on a flight to Amsterdam means booking 26 weeks in advance.

The shoulder seasons - times between peak and off-peak seasons - are especially good for saving on flights. November is the best month to travel to five of the 10 locations listed in the travel website Skyscanner’s big data examination of flight ticket prices, called the Best Time to Book study for 2016.

May is the best time to travel to two European locations, making spring and autumn periods you should target for travel.

As for the worst month to travel, February bookings will draw a 21.5 per cent premium, the study found.

Given Hong Kong was ranked the world’s eighth busiest airport by Airports Council International (of a field of 1,144), the travel options for Hong Kong residents are huge.
