Hong Kong’s best-kept secrets: where to find Taiwanese scallion pancakes and Japanese takoyaki

Hongkongers no longer have to fly all the way to Taiwan to get a dose of high-quality Taiwanese scallion pancakes. Tucked away in Tuen Mun, an alley near Lung Mun Oasis is filled with stalls selling all kinds of street food. Here, a food stall called Five Degrees specialises in Taiwanese scallion pancakes. You can choose from 22 toppings, including cheese, eggs, ham and crabstick. The pancake itself costs only HK$12 and the toppings vary from HK$6 to HK$9. The place is frequented only by residents who live nearby, so no crowds and no queues.

Right next to the Five Degrees food stall is Good Partners, which serves takoyaki - octopus-flavoured fried batter balls – matcha egg waffles topped with ice cream and crisp-fried smelt among other Japanese snacks. Our favourite is the takoyaki, and you can give it a twist by adding sesame octopus or spicy whelks. Everything is made to order and served piping hot.
Around the corner on the other side of the alley, Sai Chu Congee and Noodles is a little difficult to spot but not to be missed. Their signature congee (HK$55) contains chicken, pork liver, pork rind, slices of fish and small meatballs.

Also highly recommended is the seafood congee (HK$65), made with clams, prawns, whelks, oysters and slices of fish and abalone. Try the mantis prawn congee, with prawns the size of your arm. The owner refused to tell us his secret to making such smooth and velvety congee, but hinted that he added yuba to make it more silky.
