Hong Kong’s best luxury hotel staycation packages amid tourism downturn triggered by pro-democracy protests

  • Tourist numbers to the city in August were down by 40 per cent compared to the same time last year, following months of unrest
  • In an effort to boost the tourism industry, hotels are offering Hongkongers enticing staycation packages
Hong Kong’s tourism industry is suffering its worst downturn in more than a decade as anti-government protests, now in their 17th week, continue to rock the city.

Tourist numbers are down – dropping 40 per cent in August from the same time last year, according to Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po.

As a way to boost the sagging industry some hotels are offering staycation packages to city residents.

Guests at The Langham will get a HK$500 dining credit at three-Michelin-star Cantonese restaurant T’ang Court.

Holders of a Hong Kong Identity Card can take advantage of the Starry Journey staycation package (from HK$1,865) at the Langham in the heart of Kowloon. The package includes breakfast buffet for two and early check-in (10am) and late checkout (3pm). Guests will also get a HK$500 dining credit at three-Michelin-star Cantonese restaurant T’ang Court and complimentary access to Chuan Body + Soul rooftop wellness sanctuary with an outdoor swimming pool and 24-hour fitness centre.

This grande dame in the heart of Wan Chai turns 30 this year, and to mark its anniversary it is offering guests a hyped up version of its Escape 24 staycation package (HK$2,680) designed for Hong Kong residents. It includes access to its 50-metre outdoor heated swimming pool and 24-hour fitness studio, as well as two choices from the following list: HK$1,000 spending credit per night to be used on food and drink; daily breakfast for two at Grand Cafe; buy one get one Plateau Spa treatment per stay (only applicable Monday – Thursday) and a bottle of champagne and fresh strawberries upon arrival.

Located in Central, The Murray’s new staycation deal is all about reviving the body, mind and spirit. The Spa Indulgence Staycation package (HK$6,500+ for 2 guests) includes a one-night stay with breakfast and welcome tea for two, a meditation class for two, facial for two as well as use of the vitality pool, swimming pool and gymnasium.

The St. Regis Hong Kong

This luxe newcomer opened its doors in Wan Chai in April. Its Weekend Retreat Package (from HK$4,000 per night), available until October 31, includes HK$1,000 credit to use at the hotel’s spa or dining outlets. In keeping with the brand’s reputation built on bespoke service, the deal includes a butler at your beck and call, 24 hours a day.

Popular with families, the Le Méridien Cyberport is a good choice for those looking to escape the city without having to travel too far. Its South Escape Staycation (HK$1,350-HK$3,450) package includes a Hong Kong Island pickup, daily buffet breakfast for two adults, a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine and a HK$200 food and drink credit per stay.

The InterContinental Hong Kong has a Local Wanderlust staycation package.

This five-star favourite in Tsim Sha Tsui is offering a Local Wanderlust package (from HK$2,455) for Hong Kong residents that includes a room upgrade, early check-in and late checkout, breakfast buffet at Harbourside restaurant (for 2 adults and up to 2 children under 12 years old per room) and HK$1,000 hotel credit per stay for use in the hotel’s restaurants and bars or at its feng shui-inspired I-Spa.
