The Matterhorn above Cervinia provides an unforgettable welcome. But these days, that is rivalled by the Saint Hubertus Resort.
The understated elegance will have all but the keenest of mountain lovers lingering in their rooms, at the bar, or the sumptuous spa. If that could be called a downside it's probably the only one.
Designed by Italian architect Savin Couelle, this "bio-resort" conserves energy and is in harmony with its surroundings. It invites you to relax from the moment you enter - ideal after a day on the ski slopes.
The apartments, for between two and five adults, are individually designed and furnished by artists and craftsmen. There are stone fireplaces, fully equipped kitchens (meals are also available in the restaurant, or as room service), hand-carved marble bathrooms with Hermès toiletries, and an iPod in each room that works as a remote control for the television and music system. Each apartment is designed to take full advantage of the resort's location in the midst of pine woodland beneath the iconic peak.
There are stone pillars from Sardinia, sand walls and arches, lamps, chairs and lift doors sculpted by French artist Francois Tevenin and hand-wrought iron door hinges and stair rails.
The wellness area is as inviting as the apartments. A generous swimming pool takes centre stage, with cross-current jets, waterfalls and subtle lighting and a large whirlpool which cascades into the main pool. Picture windows provide an alpine panorama.
