Style confession: Zoe von Hess

As half of musical duo Head Clowns, Von Hess plays ukulele with her husband, Joseph. She’s proof you don’t have to sacrifice your style even if you’re a mum of two with another on the way.

I've got lots of hats. They help bring outfits up for the weekend, and make them more glamorous. And they complete the '50s look.

from London by a company that produces '40s- and '50s-style clothing. I love the tight fit that flatters and exaggerates a woman's silhouette and the clash of pink and red.

from a stall in Tsuen Wan. I buy simple and classic designs for shoes because I wear them out quickly if I'm performing and walking around at festivals.

We love vinyl in this house. It sounds nicer, and the ritual of putting a record on is less ephemeral. We also love old, beautiful books. We collect rare editions; some of these I've had since I was a kid.

The one I usually play is from Hong Kong Ukulele on Carnarvon Road in TST. The pink one my daughter plays for fun.

At work ...

From top: headdresses made from feathers, visors and materials from Sham Shui Po; head jewellery from a fancy-dress shop in Mong Kok; Mac Lady Danger lipstick with Maybelline eyeliner create an exaggerated look for performing; von Hess clashes a Vivien of Holloway dress ("It's cotton, so it's comfortable and not overly expensive") with a petticoat from Sam's Manufacturing; Zara gold heels to match a gold lead that she plugs her ukelele into.

... and at play

From top: Kurt Geiger silver heels boost von Hess' mood when she's out; Lulu & Red bustled skirt from London; she wears vintage stockings from stockingsdirect.co.uk, with a seam and Cuban heel, paired with suspenders and red heels.
