Lobster and saffron dry paella from La Paloma.

Newly opened: Paloma in Sai Ying Pun and Meen & Rice in Repulse Bay

La Paloma is a new Spanish restaurant next to the Sai Ying Pun MTR station, which, by March 20, should be easier to find on the first floor of the still-under-construction SoHo 189. It's a cheerful venue with decor that has a pigeon theme, as paloma means pigeon in Spanish.

Some prices will be adjusted lower than when we went, and some dishes weren't available, but what we had was delicious, for the most part. Poached mussels in escabeche, an acidic marinade (HK$68) were delicate, but the rest of the plate was covered in pickled vegetables. We liked the deep-fried pork skin with this dish.

Mama-style home-made meatballs (HK$88) were hearty and topped with cubed potatoes to soak up the tomato sauce, but the tomato salad (HK$65) with pickled chillies would have been unremarkable were it not for the crispy pork belly chips.

The lobster and saffron dry paella (HK$498, pictured) is for more than two people. The lobster was halved and cooked perfectly in its shell, the meat was juicy and fresh; the rice was flavoured with bits of squid and onions. This dish is best seasoned with lemon juice.

Save room for the Nutella chocolate brioche buns (HK$68) and the ice cream with a smoky finish and marinated berries (HK$58).

Yenn Wong of Duddell's has branched out to The Pulse in Repulse Bay with (tel: 2566 8886) which offers a fresh take on rice, congee and rice noodles.
