Newly opened Big Fernand joins crowded burger scene

Le Big Fernand

Joining the list of burger shops that have opened recently is (tel: 6650 0580) in IFC Mall.

Big Fernand is a cheerful place, the staff are friendly and you can even stick on a fake moustache for fun. The music here is stuck in the 1980s, evoking the era of MTV and big hair.

However, the burgers don't quite have the winning formula, and if you're paying more than HK$100 - especially for a place with self-service - you expect something better.

We tried Le Big Fernand (above, HK$120), which had a beef patty, sun-dried tomatoes, parsley and house-made cocktail sauce. It came medium-rare as ordered, but the bun-to-meat ratio was tipped more to the former and the patty seemed to have disintegrated inside the toasted bun. It was mushy, and quite salty, probably due to the Tomme de Savoie cheese.

Le Victor (HK$130) was better - a meaty, juicy veal burger with creamy blue cheese, caramelised onions, coriander and sweet house-made mayonnaise.

We ordered the combo, but the fries were unappetising, limp and dark brown.
