Restaurant review: Mitte, Sheung Wan - delicious Italian, odd-looking space

Friendly staff, quality ingredients and some nice variations on Italian staples made for a pleasant meal.

Italian

about HK$310 without drinks or the service charge.

it's a strange mix, with a DJ, disco ball and a bar area into which a tiny kitchen space is squeezed.

Fare play: linguine with colatura di alici.

linguine with colatura di alici (anchovy juice), tomatoes and parsley (HK$148) sounds simple, but it was an excellent dish because of the quality of the ingredients; the tomatoes were sweet, and they didn't stint on the anchovy. Bucatini amatrice (HK$128) with guanciale, tomato and pecorino was a very cheesy, rich version and the bucatini was a little overcooked, but the flavours were still enjoyable. Deep-fried lamb chops (HK$210) had mild-tasting, moist meat that was served with deliciously sweet, crunchy caramelised onions. Grilled calamari with Amalfitan sauce (HK$220) featured two large, well-charred calamari that were tender, despite the size.

Deep-fried lamb chops.

our waiter didn't take our order correctly, but he was friendly and tried to make things right.

the waiter somehow missed writing down one of the pasta dishes we ordered, so the second pasta was served with our main courses. There was a long wait between some courses, and there was a hair in one of the dishes. The burrata di Andria served with 20 months matured Parma ham (HK$220) wasn't oozy enough.

We were too full for dessert, even though the nutellina (deep-fried pizza dough with Nutella) sounded tempting.
