Favourite Hong Kong restaurants of Miele's Richard Green

South African Southsider knows his way around Stanley's dining options, can't get enough of one Central restaurant, and likes his steak and burgers

I am a South African who grew up along the coast near farming communities, so food was always fresh, served in big portions with an abundance of red meat and seafood. I like simplicity and honesty in the food I eat.

To start a working day or when I have a coffee break I go to (Manhattan Place, 23 Wang Tai Road, Kowloon Bay, tel: 2670 6830), a small coffee shop near our office. It's friendly, run by the owner, and serves good coffee.

For a two- to three-person business lunch my first pick is the counter at (shop 401, Landmark, Central, tel: 2166 9000). I love everything about it, and have been going there for the past seven years. I tend to go for the lamb if it's on the menu, and mashed potatoes.

My new discovery is (shop 308, 3/F Lee Gardens Two, 28 Yun Ping Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 2505 6228) for a more relaxed lunch. Try the awesome 63-degree poached egg, duxelles and mushroom emulsion.

We have two large dogs and live out in Chung Hom Kok, and most of the restaurants in the Stanley Plaza area are really pet-friendly. (shop G04, Stanley Plaza, 23 Carmel Road, Stanley, tel: 2813 0270) is particularly easy-going and we normally do a morning bread and coffee run there after walking the dogs on the beach.

(64 Stanley Main Street, Stanley, tel: 2813 9055) is nice for a quiet evening and the menu is always changing. And we like heading to (The Arcade, 109 Repulse Bay Road, Repulse Bay, tel: 2292 2821) for an early breakfast or brunch.

We also love the (303 Shek O Village Road, Shek O, tel: 2809 4426) as it is a laid-back spot for lunch after the beach.

When people are visiting us in Hong Kong, we make sure they get to eat at the (1/F, 88 Lockhart Road, Wan Chai, tel: 2527 2872). My wife has been going there since she was six years old and some of the staff still remember her from back then. Their food never fails to please.

I am a huge fan of the Argentinian steak house (5/F LHT Tower, 31 Queen's Road Central, tel: 2386 8090). The beef is fantastic quality and the portions are man-sized. The wine list has an amazing array of good Argentinian wines of remarkable value. Try the beef empanadas, and I always go for the cuadril rump but each cut has its merit — they also do a very good meat sample plate. Hold the sides. Go hungry.

After a few drinks on a Saturday, (Sun Wise Building, 112-114 Wellington Street, Central, tel: 2347 0777) signature dry-aged black Angus beef burger is the best follow-up bite I've had in a while.
