Newly opened Beer & Fish - comfort food and craft beers

Small Central restaurant near PMQ does a nice take on beer-battered fish, but some of the dishes are underseasoned

(tel: 2540 0888), a closet-sized space where you can get your deep-fried food and craft beer fix, opened recently in Staunton Street, Central, across from PMQ. It doesn't take reservations, so you either have to wait for a seat or order a takeaway.

Here, Atlantic cod (HK$128) is deep fried in batter made with either wheat beer, amber ale or stout. The one with chilli amber was delicious - the large tender fillets coated with a crisp, not-too-thick crust that went well with the smoky chipotle remoulade. However, the hand-cut triple-fried fries were thick and limp.

The presentation of the crab cake with poached egg on toast (HK$78 for half) was good, particularly with the runny yolk, but the crab cake itself was bland. The same could be said for the beer-battered shrimp (HK$78), which was overwhelmed by the citrus mint aioli. Another dish in need of more seasoning was the mac and cheese casserole (HK$48). The cinnamon toast crunch shake (HK$88) was very creamy and had to be eaten with a spoon, rather than drunk through a straw. It also needed to be much colder - perhaps crushed ice would have helped - and we couldn't taste the dash of whisky.

There are 16 bottled craft beers and ciders, and these are rotated regularly.
