French label Maison Kitsuné opens first Hong Kong boutique

Maison Kitsuné clothing combines Parisian chic with New York street wear; success of recent pop-up store prompted it to open its first Southeast Asian store

Hot on theheels of its successful pop-up store last March, French label Maison Kitsuné has finally opened its first Southeast Asian boutique here in Hong Kong. The label has been popular with Hongkongers thanks to its musical street cred — it began as a record label, and its clothing combines Parisian chic with New York street wear.

The 800 sq ft space in Causeway Bay features a similar design concept to Maison Kitsuné's other boutiques: industrial flooring and black-and-white tiles. Owners Gildas Loaec and Masaya Kuroki have added Asian touches in the form of old photographs and antique Chinese furniture and maps, which they bought at flea markets. Red lanterns hang from the ceiling.

Fans can expect a much wider selection of merchandise, including four new styles from the bestselling "Hong Kongaise" collection, including a retro men's bowling shirt and a chambray dress for girls. There are accessories from the likes of J.M Weston, New Balance and Maison Bonnet, all of which produce exclusive styles for the brand.

The store is a joint venture with local lifestyle boutique Kapok, and a selection of accessories and brands are available. The industrial designs from New York jewellery brand Miansai are currently popular.

Of course, the clothes take pride of place. The new autumn-winter collection has just arrived and is inspired by South Korea and its trendsetting aesthetics. Highlights include screen prints of trigrams (inspired by the country's flag) and drawings from South Korean artist Moonasi on jumpers and shirts. Houndstooth, stripes and checks cover separates for men and women. Look out for tees emblazoned with the words Parisienne and other more cheeky slogans in French. Don't forget to grab a Maison Kitsuné CD — its compilations are played at hip hotels around the world.
