Restaurant review: School Food, Causeway Bay [branch closed] - modern Korean snacks

We're not sure about the motto "Dreamy taste in your mouth", but we do like the food and ambience at School Food, the new 80-seat Korean restaurant in Times Square. The popular chain, which has outlets in Japan, the US and Indonesia, specialises in Korean street snacks. Think topokki (rice cakes) and kimbap (rice and fillings rolled in seaweed), with a modern twist.

The spacious outlet has chic decor, colourful, mismatched chairs, a vintage jukebox and upbeat K-pop playing in the background. The School Food punch (HK$55) - a banana, mango, strawberry and yogurt concoction - is a sweet, cooling treat. But for bigger groups, Athie, the colourful fruit sodas which come in four flavours by the jug (HK$88 to HK$98) look inviting. Many dishes are good for sharing.

School naengmyeon (HK$70) is a cold buckwheat noodle dish served in a bowl with cold beef broth and shaved ice. Don't be fooled by the icy broth - it gets spicier as you get deeper into the bowl. So make sure you can take the heat. The chilli-seasoned green onion salad in chicken gangjeong (HK$78) also has a strong kick.

My guest loved the creamy soy carbonara topokki (HK$68), which has a white cream sauce that was slightly sweeter than normal; it goes well with the chewy rice cake and springy Korean noodles. We also love the squid ink mari (HK$68) with mayonnaise as it has layers of flavours and texture.
