Film review: Non-Stop is a thriller that never takes off
Richard James Havi

NON-STOP
Starring: Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Michelle Dockery
Directed by: Jaume Collet-Serra
Category: IIA
This action adventure starts by convincing viewers it has something clever up its sleeve, but ends up deceiving them.
A neat psychological set-up that references Alfred Hitchcock's suspenseful style rearranges itself midway to become a banal B-movie that finishes in a thoroughly ridiculous manner. Viewers who started off intrigued will feel ripped off by the end.
The story is set on a plane, but those with a fear of flying will have little cause for alarm until the last few scenes.
The cabin setting is used to build a sense of claustrophobia rather than as impetus for the action. It's only in the finale that the standard tropes of a disaster movie set in. Even then the action scenes are underplayed, as the film was made with a general release in mind.
