An image of what appears to be a screen capture of an Asia tour announcement on Daft Punk’s official website sent Hong Kong fans into a frenzy. The photo, which supposedly has the French electro duo playing in Hong Kong on July 13, made the rounds on social media, leading to events website Timable listing the gig (with only the photo as a source).

Alas, the news seems too good to be true. 48 Hours spoke to Nora Wong, senior marketing officer of Live Nation, and Leslie Ho, marketing manager of Sony Music Entertainment in Hong Kong. Both say they have not heard about Daft Punk coming to Asia. Wong says she checked with the band’s agent in Britain and was told it will not be happening.
(We notified Timable on Twitter, and they updated their website to question the authenticity of the photo.) Website daftpunk.com shows no such tour announcement either.
So, it looks like the photo was the work of a bored internet troll… unless Daft Punk, one of the most eccentric, elusive and mysterious acts in the music industry, are taking a new approach to viral marketing.
