Located atop Macau's highest hill, and accessible by a path leading up from Flora Garden or reputedly the world's shortest cable car ride, Guia Fortress is a local landmark that forms part of Unesco's World Heritage-listed Historic Centre of Macau. Few people venture inside the complex, however, where you'll find the oldest lighthouse in the South China Sea and the 17th century Chapel of Our Lady Guia. Established by Clarist nuns, the chapel (open daily from 10am-5pm, closed on Mondays) is decorated with elaborate frescoes that were uncovered during conservation work in 1996. Incorporating both Chinese and Western religious and mythological motifs, they are testimony to Macau having been a place where East and West mingled for centuries.
