Food Review: Yakiniku Futago HK offers quality barbecue, but needs better ventilation

Hamideru karubi (HK$150) was a very thin piece of beef so big that it didn't fit on the grill. The waitress cooked it briefly, then cut it into smaller pieces — a few of which were almost pure fat — to cook some more.

yakiniku (Japanese-style Korean barbecue)

about HK$250 without drinks or the service charge

loud and crowded

hamideru karubi (HK$150) was a very thin piece of beef so big that it didn't fit on the grill. The waitress cooked it briefly, then cut it into smaller pieces — a few of which were almost pure fat — to cook some more. The meat was soft and tender. Thick prime outside skirt (HK$148) had a richer flavour that could stand up to the dab of pungent wasabi served with it. Beef tongue with yuzu pepper (HK$58) was quite mild by itself, and needed the spiciness of the yuzu kosho. We prefer unmarinated meat, but the barbecue sauce on the wagyu prime karubi (HK$98) was good — it was light and not too sweet, so you could still taste the beef.

Beef with sea urchin "wrap" at Yakiniku Futago.

Beef with sea urchin (HK$38 per piece) was unusual and delicious: the waitress seared the thinly sliced meat, wrapped it with seasoned nori and fresh shiso leaf, then added the uni.

the staff grill the meat for you.

the ventilation is ineffective — we came out smelling of smoke. The grease from the grilling meat splatters, so there's a reason that they offer you a bib to wear and a clear plastic bag for your mobile phone.

The address is on Irving Street, but the entrance to the restaurant is on Pennington Street.
