Restaurant review: Waffling Beans, Kennedy Town - waffles and coffee

Waffling Beans is in the emerging food neighbourhood of Kennedy Town, which is still under the radar enough that it has a quiet, laid-back ambience. The airy cafe, complete with high ceilings and a playful white fluorescent sign that reads "Take Your Time" backwards, is ideal for enjoying a weekend pick-me-up, especially for those who want a break from the hustle and bustle.
Opened by a Taiwanese restaurateur, the cafe's menu lists artisanal hand-drip coffee and waffles of various flavours. Categorised into sweet, savoury and the in-between, the Belgian Liege waffles are made using a cast iron press imported from Belgium.
The Pear-up, Double-Cheese Down (HK$83), one of the in-between options, is a stack of pear, sautéed red onion and melted cheddar with a maple-balsamic glaze. Its layered texture, with crunchy fruit and vegetable and a chewy cheddar wrap, blends sweet and savoury flavours.
The 7th Heaven (HK$68) is a delicious sweet treat with Belgian chocolate chips, fresh strawberries and freshly whipped cream. And you won't regret paying an extra HK$20 for the two scoops of vanilla ice cream.
The menu also has some dishes in larger portions, which are best shared among a few friends.
The Ballekes (HK$153) is our favourite. The lamb meatballs are juicy and melt in the mouth and is served with a rich tomato and fresh basil sauce which makes a great dip for the accompanying waffle.
