More than 200 of the 235 species of butterflies found in Hong Kong have been seen at the 42-hectare Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve. Designated a Special Site of Scientific Interest in 1980, the conservation area is managed by the Tai Po Environmental Association, which offers day memberships for HK$20 per person. The site is also a safe haven for other small creatures including colourful dragonflies, jaw-droppingly large spiders and tiny grasshoppers. It is open all year round, bar a few public holidays, and this time of year — particularly between 9am and 11am — is one of the best to catch a glimpse of some of nature's prettiest creations.
Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, 150 Fung Yuen Rd, Ting Kok Road, Tai Po. Open 9.30am-5pm
