travelled around Asia regularly since 2008, and recently began to produce sculptures on the mainland. "I have a few projects going on throughout Asia," says the prolific artist, who is also showing at Taka Ishii Gallery in Tokyo, the Ullens Centre in Beijing, and biennials in both Gwangju and Taipei.

"When Gagosian [Gallery] invited me to present works in Hong Kong, it seemed like the perfect time to do a show here. I'm excited to come back to Hong Kong; I love the architecture, the hillside elevation and the water," says the German-born, US-raised Ruby, who has been based in Los Angeles since he enrolled for his MFA programme at Pasadena's Art Centre College of Design in 2003.

With his affection for landscapes, it's no surprise that Ruby has created a set of works inspired by the Los Angeles skies for the Gagosian show. Called "VIVIDS", the suite of spray paintings, predominantly in fluorescent pink, are an attempt to "use low street materials and an urban aesthetic to get to something meditative", he says.

The resulting showcase, which consists of a uniform canvas size and a singular palette, looks minimalist but excessively vibrant. "I wanted the paintings to have a radiance that seems almost electrical," says Ruby, who has been painting since 2007.

"I like that I have found a way to make spray paint non-representational while working within the historical lineage of both landscape and abstract painting."

For the past decade, Ruby, now 42, has attracted a huge following, despite working in a vast range of mediums.
