Restaurant review: Espuma, Tsim Sha Tsui - Spanish desserts fantastic

Espuma has been attracting dessert lovers since it opened three months ago. The ambience is casual, with whimsical murals and some wall hangings.

The bar area features a Spanish cured ham, ready to be carved. The place is a joint venture between ScarNov Coffee and Cafes Novell from Barcelona.

The menu is international, with everything from fish and chips to paella, pizzas and Japanese curry, plus a selection of Spanish tapas.

Devil Eats Brownies.

The scallop ceviche (HK$58) made a good starter, thanks to its refreshing orange and dill marinade. The caramelised chicken wings (HK$38) were well seasoned and crispy, although we wished they had properly removed the fine feathers from the skin. The potatoes and onion in the classic tortilla (HK$48) were undercooked, and the seafood wasn't very fresh in the paella con marisco (HK$98).

But we loved the sweet stuff. The signature fresh fruit tea (HK$42) — served in a clear pot on a mini stove — was a delicious blend of fresh fruit, Taiwanese tea and basil seeds. And the desserts will tempt us back. All are made to order, and it was hard to decide which one to have. We demolished Pear It All (HK$58), a warm, delicate puff pastry tart topped with fanned-out pear slices and vanilla ice cream. The crispy waffle named Devil Eats Brownies (HK$48, half; HK$78, full), was also enjoyable.

We should have ordered the Japon, too, as who doesn't like chewy mochi in their waffle?
