Restaurant review: Sooo Vegi, North Point - filling vegetarian fare

Kathy Gao

Sooo Vegi is a small, tidy restaurant at the corner of Shell and Merlin Streets in North Point. It's easy to spot because the white windows and green walls stand out from the brown of the neighbouring shops. Some may think that vegetarian restaurants serve lightweight dishes that leave you hungry in an hour or two, but the food at Sooo Vegi is satisfying and filling, with fresh and sometimes meaty flavours. They serve a wide range of dishes, from Mexican wraps (HK$30) and Italian spaghetti (HK$42), to laksa (HK$42).

Our starter of pumpkin soup (HK$20) was fresh and sweet with herbs lingering on our palates. The Mexican wraps were healthy and filling, with fresh green vegetables, avocado and kidney beans.

Next came the vegetarian spaghetti bolognese, which looks and tastes just like the meat version. The Chinese-style vegetable dishes normally come with rice but you can also order them alone. The stir-fried red cabbage (HK$55) retained the original flavour of the leaves because, unlike at many other Chinese restaurants, the food at Sooo Vegi isn't cooked with MSG and minimal oil is used. Chopped green beans with crumbled tofu (HK$55) that resembled meat was a bit spicy but palatable. The Malaysian laksa (HK$42) — recommended by the owner — lived up to expectations. With a good blend of herbs and spices, the savoury broth with rice noodles is almost addictive.

The owner said they target not just vegetarian diners but also meat-eaters who want more greens. I don't understand the practice of preparing vegetarian dishes to resemble meat, but they were appreciated by my non-vegetarian friends.
