Those familiar with the Star Street area may have noticed the sudden disappearance of contemporary art space Galerie Huit, which opened a few years ago.

Last year, founder Jane Chao decided it was time to bring something fresh to the neighbourhood. She closed the gallery during the summer and reopened it recently as Maison Huit, a lifestyle concept store featuring everything from jewellery to furniture.

Maison Huit's previous incarnation is obvious as soon as you step into the tiny 400 sq ft space that features stone walls and sleek display cabinets that once housed sculptures and other treasures. This time, however, they are filled with gifts sourced by its new group of owners — including four stylish socialites and friends of Chao's — from their travels round the world.

If you are after the latest designs off the catwalks, you've come to the wrong place. Maison Huit focuses on niche brands. None of the products are mass-produced; they are available in limited quantities, making it the ideal shopping spot for connoisseurs who appreciate beauty and craftsmanship.

Among the brands available is Anna Blum, which offers jewel box accessories including clutches made from luxe exotic skins, which have an heirloom quality.
