The Yuck factor: post-punk revivalists to play Hong Kong in April

When Daniel Blumberg left Yuck in 2013, most expected the London post-punk revivalists — whose 2011 debut was a hit with critics and fans — to fade into obscurity. After all, Blumberg was the founder and frontman, and his soulful vocal delivery and gritty guitar riffs inspired comparisons to genre pioneers Sonic Youth.

But Yuck's other three members carried on, releasing two solid albums in the past two years. On April 1, they return to Hong Kong (they last played here in 2011, with Blumberg) courtesy of promoters Songs For Children. No venue has been announced, but we hear mumblings it'll be at the Hang Out in Sai Wan Ho. Visit facebook.com/indiehk for ticket details.

While cinephiles will argue there are more coveted film accolades to be had, the Academy Awards remain the main event for most fans of pop culture. But local cinema-goers have been frustrated in years past by the fact that many nominated films didn't hit local screens until well after the Oscars had been handed out.

That has changed this year, with six of the eight best picture nominees already shown here, and the last two ( The Imitation Game and Selma) to get special preview screenings this Friday at Broadway Cinematheque and Sunday at UA Cine Times, respectively. This marks the first time in recent memory that Hongkongers can (legally) watch every best picture nominee ahead of the February 22 awards ceremony. A rep at a local film distributor told 48 Hours the strategy was adopted in response to audience demand.
