Restaurant review: Saravanna Bhavan - Indian vegetarian cuisine

Many of the dishes at this Tsim Sha Tsui restaurant  are a success, and we liked all the breads we tried.

basic, brightly lit and clean.

we love Indian vegetarian food because it doesn't taste healthy, and many of the dishes here were successful. Ghee roast masala dosa (HK$70) had a crisp but yielding crêpe with well-spiced potatoes inside. We liked all the breads we tried — puffy (but slightly oily) pooris (HK$30 for two), butter naan (HK$30) and plain kulcha (HK$35), which went very well with the excellent hot dishes: mushroom rogan josh (HK$75), which was just as delicious and complexly spicy as the usual lamb version, and kadai paneer (HK$75), a rich, savoury mix of vegetables and cheese.

apart from the food being served all at once, the service was friendly and accommodating.

the food came out far too quickly, even though we asked several times that it be served slowly, which meant many of the hot dishes were tepid by the time we had the chance to eat them. Chilli bajji (HK$50) was overcooked, so the chickpea batter tasted burned. The tomato, onion and chilli uthappam (HK$70) had too much raw onion. The mysore roast masala dosa (HK$70) was folded into quarters with the filling spread between the layers, which meant the crêpe became soggy.

Saravanna Bhavan has a large outdoor area.

They don't sell alcohol. There's a large outdoor area, which is nice. The restaurant is part of a global chain originating in India.
