David Laris has opened several concepts in the city, the last one being Bellbrook. Before that, in the same location, was fine-dining Laris. Both are closed and, now with Porterhouse by Laris, he is going for classic steakhouse fare.

Feeling right at home in the new California Tower, Porterhouse by Laris has a sleek contemporary interior with a mirrored geometric ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central. It is airy and spacious. The restaurant pays homage to classic steak dishes.

We started with a refreshing king crab and avocado cocktail set in a lemongrass gazpacho (HK$198) and cold pate with rhubarb jelly (HK$208) with brioche. Both are worthy of praise. We then went for the rib-eye (HK$658/26oz) with a side of roasted Brussels sprouts and bacon (HK$88) and grilled Portobello mushrooms with mint and lemon zest (HK$78).

The steak was deliciously tender, accompanied by a choice of six mustards. We also tried the char-grilled sakura chicken (HK$238) with lime which was juicy and tender.

To end a perfect meal, we went for the classic New York-style cheesecake with Graham cracker crust and drunken berry sauce (HK$88) which was thankfully not US portions, and the seasonal sorbets (HK$78). Wine pairing is also available.
