Spacious eatery Shiki Zen serves omakase fresh from the sea, handmade udon and perfectly cooked grilled beef
FARE Japanese omakase set dinner.
AMBIENCE Spacious (6,800 sq ft is rare in Hong Kong for an eatery) and comfortable with simple wooden chairs and tables. It is also relatively quiet compared with other big restaurants. Tables by the side get a nice view of the city.
COST Five-course meal for two is about HK$1,800 without alcohol.
WHO TO BRING Family and friends.
TURN-ONS Entrusting the chef to serve us the best he has to offer, we eagerly anticipate the omakase that is to come. And when the food arrives, especially the sashimi plate, they are beautifully presented and look almost too good to eat. The ingredients are extremely fresh. Our sashimi comes with top-standard fresh slivers of some of the best catch from the sea. The tempura is just as delicious. But we are impressed most by the grilled beef, each piece cooked to perfection. Shuki Zen is reputed to have one of the best udon in town which is handmade by the chef, and our sanuki udon does not disappoint either.
TURN-OFFS It is more noted for its buffet than omakase, so the staff are unfamiliar with omakase. The food takes some time to arrive.
DRINKS Shiki Zen has an impressive drinks menu including wines and sake. We have two small 300ml bottles of warm sake costing HK$800 that are recommended by staff. They seem overpriced compared with other restaurants.
