Los Sotano offers more than tequila and guacamole in Mexican adventure

It is hard to ignore the margaritas at a Mexican establishment, so we tried the sweet Los Sotano margarita and the spicy Hot Mamacita

Los Sotano stands out in the Lan Kwai Fong party district with its morbid-chic Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead)-themed décor. At the basement restaurant and bar, which is part of Cali-Mex, you will find one of the most expensive tequilas (HK$3,000 a shot) and best guacamole in town.

It is hard to ignore the margaritas at a Mexican establishment, so we tried the sweet Los Sotano margarita (HK$120) made with Avion Silver Tequila, fresh lime, agave and orange liquor, and the spicy Hot Mamacita (HK$140) with fresh chilli peppers. It made for a punchy start.

We ordered jalapeño poppers (HK$80) and street tacos (HK$50 each). There are seven variations on tacos: Al Pastor (spit roasted pork shoulder); Camarones (Avion Tequila marinated shrimp with chilli); Pescado (beer battered fish); grilled USDA rib-eye; fresh avocado with cheese; Carnitas (slow roasted pork belly); and southern fried chicken. The pork shoulder, rib-eye and fried chicken were good. Each taco, while small, was tasty.

Staff will prepare the recommended tableside guacamole (HK$150) in front of you. This can easily be shared between four, and you can have it with USDA rib-eye (an additional HK$60), free range chicken (HK$40), or Tequila marinated shrimp (HK50).

Ceviche is another favourite with the Vallarta (HK$125; sea bass) or the Aguachile de Camaron (HK$135; shrimp with coriander and cucumber). We tried the latter and were left craving more.
