Whisk’s ‘umami and pearls’ at Mira Hong Kong set the scene for fun night out

European dining at the Mira Hong Kong in Nathan Road is full of favourites

FARE European. AMBIENCE Modern, dimly lit décor. COST HK$2,313 for two, including bottled water and two glasses of wine. WHO TO BRING Friends and family for a fun night with good food. TURN-ON S We particularly enjoyed our “umami and pearls”, the name given to our starter of Enshui Murasaki sea urchin, French-farmed caviar and cauliflower cream. The richness of the cream and uni complemented the salty caviar, making this one of our favourites. It went well with our other starter, hand-chopped wagyu beef tartare box, which was very smooth. Our Hokkaido sea urchin risotto, which included artichoke, was a hit - the creamy risotto was an ideal way to follow starters, and we wished we had ordered another. The night ended strongly with Zen Garden (a velvety, molten chocolate and matcha cake) and rogue berries mille-feuille (a deconstructed version of regular mille-feuille; instead of a multi-tiered cake, four thin waffle biscuits stuck vertically into a bed of light, refreshing basil cream topped with berries). TURN-OFFS The tables were large, which we usually love, but found it difficult to hear each other. The bread basket was a visual delight with pops of bright red and green, but was tasteless. The 28+ day, dry-aged US black Angus rib-eye steak was enjoyable but the grilled vegetables let us down; the zucchini was not grilled enough, while the other vegetable, which we suspected was eggplant, but it was too blackened to tell. DRINKS The wide range on the wine menu will delight aficionados.
