Chaat: delicious Indian street food on your plate at Rosewood Hong Kong
- From the chaat to the curries and dum biryani, this reasonably priced restaurant does not disappoint
Chaat brings reimagined Indian street food to the fine dining table, resulting in a delectable spread at reasonable prices. Recommended starters include sharing plates of baked lamb samosa (HK$128) with deliciously spiced lamb presented in cones and a yogurt dip. Also a must-try is the raj kachori – crispy lentils stuffed with green peas with sweet and tangy chutney (HK$88). The tandoori paneer tikka (HK$160) was the best paneer we have tasted, and comes garnished with chestnut and tomato. The tandoori lamb chops with pistachio and mint chutney (HK$398) was also a winner; the tender meat fell off the bone. The black Angus beef short rib kebab with capers, chilli and raita (HK268) and the malai grouper tikka with ginger, garlic and dill (HK$288) were also perfectly cooked, with the right amount of spice so as not to overwhelm the palate.
Onto the curries, and we loved the Bengali prawn curry with kasundi mustard and coconut (HK$260). The creamy sauce has a sweet and spicy taste complementing the fresh prawns. The pork cheek vindaloo with Goan sauce (HK$178) wasn’t the usual fiery affair but had pleasant sour notes before the spice hits – nothing a glass of Portuguese white wine could not douse. The lamb dum biryani with aged basmati rice, saffron and spices (HK$228) was presented to look like a cake, which was fun. Also the bone marrow kulcha (HK$78) was a tasty treat and added extra flavour when we dipped it in the curry sauce. The only disappointment was the bhel puri with scallops, puffed rice, peanuts and tamarind (HK$138) – it just did not bring the exciting flavours of the other dishes. The lemon tart with saffron lemon ice cream was a refreshing and light way to end the feast.
