The sandwich may be a simple and humble thing, but it’s also absolutely magical. It has endless possibilities of bread varieties, condiment choices and filling combinations, all mixed and matched into one neat and portable food entity. We satisfy our carb-cravings with some of the best sandwich choices in town.

Stellar Steak Sandwich

After some extensive taste testing and kitchen experimentation, the beef experts at Dakota Prime have finally come up with their own version of the near-perfect steak sandwich. The sandwich is filled with tender slices of their signature grilled USDA prime New York strip steak combined with a healthy dose of arugula and sweet, caramelized onions. The meat is then topped off with slices of sharp Cheddar and the whole thing arrives on the plate, sandwiched between two pieces of lovely crisp, garlic buttered, toasted bread. The sandwich also comes with a little vat of the restaurant’s own gravy, which you can liberally spoon over the meat and bread. All in all? It’s absolutely scrumptious.

Very Viet

Delicieux Bistro has become the go-to spot for authentic banh mi sandwiches since it opened in September last year. Located on the Graham Street slope, the tiny store does eight varieties of the popular Vietnamese sandwich. In order to stay true to the authentic flavors of the Viet sandwich, Delicieux owner chef Zhao (who is of Vietnamese heritage) insists on making all the pickled condiments and liver pâté from scratch. Chef Zhao has also succeeded in finding the perfect baguette for his sandwiches—the ones available at Delicieux are beautifully fluffy in the center but toasted to crisp crunchiness on the outside. The sandwiches are made and toasted to order, which takes a bit of time, but the taste is well worth the wait. Order the Deluxe Viet sandwich if you want to sample the best that Delicieux has to offer. The big sandwich is spread with a layer of pâté and then stuffed to the brim with Vietnamese ham and salted pork knuckle, pickled carrots and radish strips, a few tufts of savory meat floss, and a handful of chopped coriander and chilies for a nice fragrant, spicy kick.

Cheesiest Croque

This cheese-laden carbohydrate concoction might not be the best thing for your health but, hey—it’s delicious. Saveur de France on Hollywood does a fantastic rendition of this gussied up French grilled cheese sandwich. Two pieces of crust-removed white bread sandwich a generous layer of thinly sliced savory ham and gruyère cheese. The whole thing is then grilled until the cheese becomes beautifully creamy and gooey. And because the folks at Saveur de France are wonderful people, they also add an extra helping of cheese sauce on top of the sandwich for an extra dose of delectable indulgence. Bon appétit!
