Not So Pseudo
Forget the books. Here are the real stars of the summer. Introducing the ever-controversial “leng mo.”

It’s Girls Gone Wild: Hong Kong-style. Chrissie Chau eats a sausage and A.Lin and Dada become pseudo lesbians. Also, meet Donut, the formidable six-girl gang of “leng mo” led by an 18-year-old named Rainbow. Welcome to the whimsical world of pseudo models, where legions of bikini-clad girls vie for your attention with big eyes, big hair and big boobs. It was exactly a year ago when these young women became a huge part of Hong Kong culture following Chrissie Chau’s explosive slimming center ad (where she strips to a bikini in the middle of Central—if you haven’t seen it, YouTube it), but we feel like they’ve been here forever. But who are these people? Besides undisputed queen bee Chau, there’s Angelababy, a tiny 21-year-old who’s hot property both here and in Japan. And don’t forget Lavina, Mia, A.Lin and Rainbow, to name just a few.
So after stealing all the headlines at last year’s book fair, they’ve been banned from promoting their new books at the fair this year, but we think they do a pretty good job of spicing things up. So seeing as you can’t meet them at the fair, meet them in HK Magazine instead.
Chrissie Chau
DOB: May 22, 1985
Best known for: Her magnificent rack aside, Chrissie Chau is known for her willingness to go as far as she can, without shame. Last year, her breakthrough pictorial, “Kissy Chrissie,” featured several provocative shots, including one of toothpaste sliding down her cleavage. Then right after that sold out, she launched the blu-ray DVD version. But none of these products can compare to her infamous pillow. Teenagers queued around the block for a $498 “super huggable” life-size pillow replica of a bikini-clad Chau. She has also made newspaper headlines after the University of Science and Technology invited her to an ill-fated talk where she was grilled about her “existentialism.” In our books, it was the lecturer that came off looking like a pretentious d-bag in this one.
Latest Works: “Les Vacances d’Amour” ($128), Chau’s 2010 release, is once again a collection of provocative photos shot mostly in France. It was on schedule to be released at the Book Fair. However, with the fair banning Chau from promoting her book, she will instead be at other venues within the Convention and Exhibition Centre to hold autograph sessions (selected days during July 21-27, details to be confirmed). After the pictorial, Chau will release her book on 3D blu-ray DVD—who could say no to a 3D Chrissie Chau?
Best Quote: “I never intended to get this ‘bikini girl’ image. When I went full time, I tried out a few styles, but this is the one people liked. Naturally, people wanted me for that again and again. That’s fine. It’s not like just anyone can be me.”
