Cantopop Newcomer Vincy Chan
Vincy Chan is a relative newcomer to Cantopop, but her voice is already earning her comparisons to Faye Wong and Sandy Lam. The Singapore-raised star gives June Ng some confidence-boosting tips.

I was born in Hong Kong. I followed my family to Singapore and stayed there for 16 years.
I’m better suited to the lifestyle in Singapore. The pace is slower, which is better for a laid-back person like me.
I came back to Hong Kong in 2005. I planned to start working as an accountant. But then one day, I decided to join a singing contest and then I became a singer! It’s my first job.
The music industry is more and more demanding. Ten years ago they might have just cared about the singer’s looks, but now the audience wants everything.
I’m not against plastic surgery, but I don’t fully embrace it either. Not all girls are born pretty, so it’s acceptable to do some mild and safe perfecting procedures. I had my eyelids operated on.
I was not always a confident person. But after I started singing and received some positive comments, I started to realize, “Hey, I do have some talent here.”
