Kings of Convenience
Sushi counters, sailor boy uniforms and durian gum. On this auspicious July 11th, we've sourced out the most pimped 7-11 outlets in town.

Most 7-11s are interchangeable, what with their harsh lighting and garish white plastic motifs. Yet this one, found alongside a reservoir built as part of Disneyland, has really went the extra mile to blend in with the surroundings. The walls and counter are made of blonde wood, and the sign is done up in a gaudy mock-framed finish. Staff uniforms are baby blue and white, navy-style. It’s just a shame there’s no Cantonese equivalent for “ooh, hello sailor.”
SkyPlaza, Hong Kong International Airport
5/F, SkyPlaza, Hong Kong International Airport, Lantau
This is the typical 7-11, but on steroids. It’s got durian-flavored Airwaves chewing gum and sonic-powered microwaves. They can dry clean your clothes here, duplicate your keys and doctor your soles. And that extraordinary smell? That’s a Mrs. Fields Cookies set up in the corner. Why, even the girl behind the counter is a part-time model. OK, we’ve exaggerated that last part, but this super 7-11 serves as the perfect welcome to just-landed visitors and begs the question, why is it that airport stores are always better than the actual city’s?
Disneyland Resort store
Disneyland MTR exit, Lantau Island
This little cart scoops the award for the dinkiest 7-11. You’d think Disneyland would be a dream place for a grander convenience store, as it is in the perfect position to cash in on overpriced sunscreen, bottled water, and little fans. Perfect for the tourist desperate to cool off or mother in need of a distraction for her nightmare children. But no, all this mobile trolley sells is basically gum, Diet Coke and water. Parents are better off making a checklist before setting off to Lantau in the morning if they want to survive the day.
