Central, 2523-3805 Spa Review Signature Spa Therapy at Mandarin Spa The signature spa therapy at the deluxe Mandarin Spa is not merely a massage; it’s a “mind and soul” treatment that is uniquely tailored to every guest. Before heading to the treatment rooms, we filled out a questionnaire asking details about our day-to-day lives, and our mood that day. The therapist then spent 20 minutes interpreting the form in order to determine the best course of treatment. Drawing from the principals of traditional Chinese medicine, it was determined that our dominating element was fire, meaning that we’re righteous, impulsive and bad-tempered (a common trait in journalists, we’re told). As if this glowing assessment weren’t enough, we were also told that our prevailing mood that day was depression. Great. To bring our body back into balance, the massage focused on the “fire” organs, namely the heart and the intestines, which are represented in TCM theory by the arms and the upper chest. A special blended oil is used to get the most out of the treatment. Knowing that our journalist forearms are often overworked, the therapist also concentrated on easing our tensions there. After the 90-minute treatment, the therapist gave us some dietary advice on what foods to avoid as a fire person, and also some simple exercises to strengthen our heart. It seemed as though the benefits of the treatment lasted for days afterwards, and it left us feeling more balanced, calmer and happier. Spa Therapy, $1,400 for 110 minutes.
