I began dancing when I was 15 years old as an extra-curricular activity in middle school.
But then my principal entered me into this pan-Hong Kong dance competition. It got me freaking out because I only knew simple steps, and now I had to be in this big thing.
So I got a real instructor from outside of school. He choreographed a dance for me, Aaron Kwok’s “Sing This Song” mixed with MJ’s “Dangerous.” I got first prize.
I thought, “wow this is cool, I’m good at dancing. I can get prizes.” So I kept on dancing.
I didn’t want to become a singer. I just wanted to be Aaron Kwok. Yeah he’s my idol.
When I was 17, my parents wanted me to go to the US for school, but I really wanted to stay in Hong Kong with my friends, and enter TVB’s New Talent Singing Awards.
So my family made a deal with me. They said I could stay in Hong Kong only if I got first prize. Even if I came second, I’d have to be shipped over to the States immediately.
Thank God I came first.
I’d lock myself at home and watch Aaron Kwok and Michael Jackson videos for days. People would think I was crazy.
I’d try and absorb everything. Not just copying their steps, their technique, but their vibe, their essence.
You can’t not go clubbing if you’re really into music and dance. I still go out dancing even though I have to train in the studio and it’s my career now.
I take around 20 of my dancer friends out. We form a circle and battle. How to work it, how to stand out in a crowd: that’s what you learn in a club setting. Plus, it’s loads of fun.
Sometimes after midnight, because security would be gone by then, I’d go out with my street dancer mates and we’d bring it outside the Cultural Centre.
Being in a boy band taught me a lot. The three of us pissed off a lot of people. We were too young, and just didn’t know how to reign all that energy in.
So I went and trained with Justin Timberlake’s dance instructor for two months in the US. That really got me inspired. And I brought that inspiration back to Hong Kong.
For my new song “Taxi,” I picked all the dancers myself. They’re all different, and I put them all together. There are breakdance and freestyle champions, hip-hop dancers...
I want to let Hong Kong know that we have awesome, passionate dancers. I want us to represent in Asia.
My biggest personal indulgence: massages. I dance and work out a lot, so I’m quite conscious of my muscles, and I really should do a bit of stretching at home. But I’m lazy, so I just continually get massages.
I’m vain. I like the bling.
Sex appeal is the most important thing for a performer. Especially for a dancer; it’s all this body movement. There must be a raw attraction for girls and boys to watch you.
What’s sexy? Being professional. It’s in the eyes as well.
On a scale of one to ten, I’d say I’m a five on the sex appeal scale.
