The food pirates have been busy this year. Here’s all the fake food that made the headlines:

Dried Fish Maw
In February, fish maw sold in Shenzhen was found to be dried rabbit’s ear. In November, another Shenzhen fish maw specimen turned out to be the same rubber shoe soles are made of.
Fat Choy (hair moss)
Also in February, 85 percent of fat choy in China was found to be fake, when it was realized the amount sold could not possibly match the very scarce supply. Fake fat choy is made of corn flour and lettuce head, and about 20 times cheaper.
Table Salt
In March, the local authorities found that 90 percent of table salt sold in Guangzhou contained high doses of toxic chemicals mercury and lead, and no sodium at all.
