Veteran politician and talk show host Allen Lee will be saying goodbye to politics for good this year. He talks about who to marry, how to raise your kids, and the importance of having as many friends as you can get.
I was born in Shandong in 1940 to a big family. My grandfather was a landlord and had many wives and sons.
My father was a successful businessman. I doubt whether I’ve seen him more than 20 times in my entire life.
I was smuggled into Hong Kong in 1954 aboard a Portuguese merchant ship. That was my mother’s idea. The Communist Party had taken everything.
The only influence my father had on me was that he insisted I study in the States. Actually, I was hoping to go to Taiwan University and play on their great basketball team.
I made my own way when I went to study in the States. I didn’t want to spend my father’s money.
In the States, I lived a pretty western life. I joined a fraternity, partied Friday night, went on lots of dates. I had fun.
