Fashion designer and G.O.D. founder Douglas Young recently made headlines when police raided one of his shops and seized a cache of allegedly suspect T-shirts. He talks to Natasha Stokes.
Short version of how I got here: I failed my exams, couldn’t be an architect, so I had to do something else.
I never thought I’d be a shop owner or fashion designer or you know, a prisoner.
When I was 14, I went to boarding school in the UK, in the middle of nowhere. I was virtually the only Chinese person there and thrown in the deep end. When you’re forced into a situation, you invent ways to adapt.
The important thing about going overseas for school is the exposure to another culture. Only then are you able to realize the idiosyncrasies of home.
I’ve always thought academic education is secondary to cultural and social education.
You should explore every interest or curiosity to its justifiable end. Life should be about that. And don’t miss any part of it, because it’s all really exciting.
