Big Mango Bar
Sukhumvit, Soi 4, 2/F Nana Entertainment Plaza, 02-613-1640 Open daily 10am-10pm. Credit cards: MC, V, AE
The Setting: If it’s atmosphere you’re after, Big Mango Bar has it in spades. Set in the heart of the lively Nana Plaza entertainment zone, this bar has VERY friendly staff, good service and unparalleled people-watching. 

The Selection: Standard selection of burgers with bacon, cheese, guacamole, etc., all priced similarly. Appetizer list includes our all-time favorite—ham and cheese spring rolls­—need we say more? 

Test burger: California Burger w/ fries (B185). Like most of the flesh in Nana Plaza, our burger seemed to have been a little over-handled. The bun fell down on the job, tasting somewhat mealy, perhaps due to overabsorption of the pasty (rather than creamy) guacamole. Crispy but unremarkable fries.
The Verdict: Friendly staff, fantastic people-watching and happy-hour deals make this a must-visit for burger-lovers who like to live on the edge. But getting here can be a trial, especially if you're with your Mama.
Bourbon Street
Sukhumvit Soi 22 (Soi Sai Nam Thip),02-259-0328 Open daily 7am-1am. Credit cards: MC, V, AE
The Setting: Frequented by long in the tooth expats and equipped with extra-large barstools to comfortably accomodate them. Wicker chairs will leave marks on your bottom. Get a booth.
The Selection: Menu has a dedicated build-your-own burger section: add bacon (B25), mushrooms (B15), cheese (B20). If you're still hungry, go for the Mexican buffet (on Tue), or the popular barbecued baby-back ribs (B290).

Test burger: Cheeseburger with bacon w/ fries (B220). Standard, old-style inoffensive burger—the kind you can find in roadside diners across America. There's nothing Cajun about it, but that's OK. The flaccid sesame seed bun, slightly chewy patty and standard fries provided a surprisingly enjoyable nostalgia trip. 
The Verdict: Burger afficionados and larger patrons will like the XL booths and barstools. But why would you order a burger when you can feast on delicious jambalaya or a big, juicy andouille sausage?
Garage Burger and Grill
Central Food Hall 7/F Central World Plaza 02-613-1640 Open daily 10am-10pm. Credit cards: MC, V, AE
The Setting: Eclectic, homey decor. There's free internet, a spring break-style outdoor bar and automobile bucket seats at the dining tables. It doesn’t get much more American than this.
The Selection: Substitute chicken or fish instead of beef for B15 on all burger choices including the Chile Burger (B210), which comes with tortillas instead of a bun, or maybe try the Aussie special with a fried egg and beets (B210).

Test burger: Cheeseburger w/ fries (B210). A solid burger, very authentic and very high quality. If you are a fan of char-grilling, this is the only burger of the eight with an authentic right-off-the flame taste. Less seasoning (salt alert!) in the meat would have allowed us to taste it more, though. Cottage fries were undercooked and went uneaten.

The Verdict: All props to a restaurant which openly professes to be a burger joint and does a great job of it. The taste and the kitsch Americana setting scream Fourth of July.
Hard Rock Cafe
Siam Square, Soi 11, 02-251-0792Open daily 11am-1am. Credit cards: MC, V, AE
The Setting: The Bangkok branch of the world’s first restaurant merchandising mega-chain has a tuk-tuk on the outside, and western music and memorabilia on the  inside. Loud music and cramped seating. 

The Selection: Two levels of burgers: Standard size and made with local meat (B300++) or the the mammoth Legendary and Big Cheese made from expensive imported beef (B550-570++).  

Test burger: Big Cheese w/ fries (B550). Two slices of (delicious) processed cheddar made each bite a gooey, cheesy treat. This was the best patty by far—but then, it is made from certified Angus Beef and it was the biggest of the eight. It's also by far the most expensive. The fries are kind of industrial, thick, and lack real potato taste.
The Verdict: You can't go wrong with the burgers. If you can handle the music, have plenty of extra cash and consider the touristy crowd part of the overall experience, then this is the place for you. Don't forget a shirt on your way out! 

Mos Burger
Central Food Hall, 7/F Central World Plaza, 02-613-1640. Open daily 10am-10pm. No credit cards
The Setting: Chic for a chain restaurant. Decked out with white leather chairs and back-lit partitions. Obsessive-compulsives (and Japanese) will love the dispensers of free anti-bacterial hand gel located by the cash register. 

The Selection: The usual array of burgers plus shrimp burgers (B79) and exceptional chili dogs (B59-69). No shakes, but they do have hot green tea, cuz Mos likes to keep it real.
Test burger: Mos Burger with Cheese (B69 + B39 for fries). The thick, juicy tomato slice is worth the price of the entire burger and is key to the overall experience. The fresh, fluffy bun facilitated an ideal meat-to-bun-to-fillings ratio. But the texture of the meat is processed, like "Salsbury Steak," and the overriding flavor is salt. 

The Verdict: The Japanese have taken burger retailing to a whole new level. (MOS is an acronym for "Mountain, Ocean, and Sun.") If you can deal with the lines, experiecing the genius of the overall concept won't cost you much. 

Roadhouse
942/1 Surawong Road, 02-236-8010. Open daily 11am-2am. Credit cards: MC, V, AE
The Setting: Wooded, sparsely lit sports bar with three floors, lively pool and shuffleboard tables and lots of seating. Mostly after-work crowd, expat and Thai. 

The Selection: Burger selections, while not a cornerstone of the menu, are well thought out and smartly presented. Free peanuts and large selection of beers (B85 and up at happy hour) round out the experience.
Test burger: Blue Cheese Burger w/ fries (B275). This is a purist’s burger. Add onions, peppers, sautéed onions and smoked bacon (included) to the blank canvas. Fries are crunchy, and have real potato taste. Comes with US-sized portions of homestyle potato salad or coleslaw.
The Verdict: Solid burger, slow delivery (so not the place to go for a quick lunch). But if you have some time, it's a solid second place to the Hard Rock Cafe—and for half the price. 

Triple O's
Central Food Hall, 7/F Central World Plaza, 02-613-1640. Open daily 10am-10pm. No credit cards
The Setting: Think McDonalds for adults. Immaculate moulded plastic furniture cast in earthy browns and beiges gives a sterile feel. The symmetrical arrangment of ketchup bottles is almost sinister. Are all Canadian burger joints this orderly?
The Selection: The Original Burger (B150), Mushroom and BC Burgers (B200) form the core of the menu, but there are chicken, veggie and breakfast burgers, too. Hand-dipped milkshakes with real ice cream are spendy (B160) but yummy.
Test burger: Original Burger with Cheese (B150 + B50 for fries). The best thing about this burger was the fluffy, fresh, and perfectly toasted bun. The freshly-cooked burger tasted great, too and had an irregular shape—just like the ones Mom used to make. We also liked the Triple "O" sauce (thousand island dresing with sweet tomato salsa), though it makes for messy hands. Forget takeaway.
The Verdict: Everything about Triple O screams classic burger joint, down to the 1950's-style American/Canadian graphics on the wrappers. The care taken with ingredients, preparation and even the service was impressive.

Tony Roma's
G/F Siam Paragon, 02-610-9311. Open daily 11am-11pm. Credit cards: MC, V, AE
The Setting: Nice. This branch of the popular American chain looks more like a hotel lobby than a restaurant. Peaceful atmosphere,  comfortable booths and plenty of privacy. Great music playing at a soothing volume.
The Selection: Four burger selections on the menu, but ribs are the obvious draw. Cheeseburgers come with choice of cheddar, jack or mozzarella and fries and coleslaw. 

Test burger: Cheeseburger with fries (B345). Though the quallity of the meat was OK, you'd expect more for the price. The cheese tasted cheap, and so did the standard thicker-than-shoestring fries. The beef could be overseasoned for some palates. The only sesame-seed bun of the bunch, and a delicious one at that.  

The Verdict: When convenience and comfort are paramount, come here. If you're looking for a remarkable burger, you could do better elsewhere for less money. Order the ribs and the onion rings instead.
