I love being on foreign soil, as it forces me to go even more fluently with the flow, rooting myself firmly in the Now, open to the Universe and effortlessly receiving the shower of goodies that you’re entitled to 24/7, if only fucked up little egos weren’t fighting it 24/7.

I especially love staying on foreign soil for FREE. Grebstad Hicks Communications has graciously summoned me to stay at charming Napasai, an Orient-Express resort with the largest private beach in Koh Samui. They just underwent a fabulous upgrade, and invited a bunch of Hong Kong media for a visit.

You’ll read about the luxury speedboat ride to the dramatic rock formations of Ang Thong Maritime Park and the idyllic lunch picnic on a deserted island in a travel story coming soon, but the first time I felt the throbbing pulse of Samui Nightlife was during lunch at Nikki Beach, where resident poolside DJs RO-Z and Andy Vier played deliciously thumping four-on-the-floor funky house on a sunny Thursday afternoon. They asked me to return and check out their infamous Sunday Brunch and Pool Party, but alas, I was to fly back to the city on that day.

At a candlelit dinner with too much white wine on Napasai’s beach, I met Ekkaphon of Bangkok Airways (who had kindly put us in business class) We immediately recognized each other as creatures of the night (said he always went to BK Mag parties) and the next evening, he drove me up the hill to Q Bar, a white minimalist lounge with a capacious terrace overlooking a lake, where I had moreish mojitos (they don’t skimp on the mint in Thailand). The DJ looked and played more like a model than a DJ, and Ekkaphon told me that DJ Modego, otherwise known as William from Sao Paulo, is an ex-model, and married to the fabulous 50-year-old lady owner. I was suddenly reminded of Hiphongkong’s luscious Liza (I’m not saying you look a day over 32, dahling)!

Time to head down dirty Soi Green Mango (or Green Mango Street) where the mega-club Sweet Soul Café—and every party person—was. Ekkaphon bought me a bucket of vodka Redbull. And when I say bucket, I mean BUCKET. (See picture)

A farang boy and a Thai girl kept throwing me hand signs. “Remember us from Nikki Beach?” It was Jacob from Miami and Jeans from Bangkok, who had been serving us lunch. More free gin from the gracious hosts. Jacob will be known as Miami Vice from now on.
