It’s a slow week for gadgets but a great one for Hong Kong tech news.
Here’s a round up of some of the coolest geek things going on in our
fine city.
For your Browsing Pleasure
It’s shocking to how long it's taken us to adopt citywide Wi-Fi coverage, but it's finally arrived. Netvigator has just started their Everywhere service - for $328/18 months, the service automatically connects you to the the strongest signal around. Stuck in the middle of Central without the latest stock tips? Bust out your laptop! Or look at the massive ticker screens...
In other browsing news, those without the fine pleasures of all-over browsing can still enjoy the benefits of public transportation connection. CSL’s wired broadband service is still in most taxis around Hong Kong, and plans are afoot to introduce Wi-Fi along the platforms of the MTR.
Get the iPhone, Already
Sick of waiting? The recent announcement unlocking of Apple’s iPhone has led the way for their sale in Hong Kong. Yes, now you too can own a real iPhone at least three months before its release in Asia, and for just $6,000 more than the retail price! No, no, don’t buy that awesome-looking and highly practical HTC Touch for just $3,500 – splash out $10k for a really cool device that will undoubtedly be obsolete come Christmas. The phones are being sold in certain computer centers around town.
China Strikes Back
Not willing to stand for the US’ hi-def DVD money mongering, China has announced their plans for an HD-DVD variant called CH-DVD – which stands for China High-Definition DVD (how original). No plans yet on how this will affect the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD fight, but expect substantially cheaper knock-off discs and players in the near future.
Brand-New PSP
About six months ago, I sold my PSP – it was just too bulky, too laggy and too unresponsive at times. But a recent test run of the new PSP Slim&Lite might mean I’m back in the portable saddle. The new model doesn’t seem different on the surface, but the considerably lighter feel (imagine the old one without the battery), sturdier set of controls and smoother loading times is a significant improvement over Sony’s old beast –- and the $1,500 retail price beats any other portable out there.
