Chef at work: Francesco fires it up in prep for Goccia's wine tasting

One Quick Thing

Christmas spirit? The next overpriced dump that has the balls to bill me a "service charge" for takeaway, take heed: names shall be named, for this is simply beyond the pale.

Foodies Unite

Matching wine and food, especially Italian, can be a bit of a puzzle, and you want to make sure you’re spending your hard-earned cash on the right glass or bottle. The last interactive workshop we had was such a hit we’ve decided to do it again, this time at Goccia (G/F, 71 Wyndham St., Central, 2167-8181). Just log on to www.peopleu.hk to register. It’s on Jan 16 at 7:30pm and includes a workshop on “Pairing Italian Food With Wine,” which gets you six wines and food with the option of a special dinner after the session. It’s hosted by wine expert Benjamin Barrraclough of Altaya Wines, Goccia’s Michelin-star chef Francesco Brocca and myself. I'm really looking forward to learning more about the different styles of Italian food and how to pick a good wine. See you at Goccia!

Newly Discovered

If you were hoping for a Christmas Miracle, rejoice in the Resurrection of J65 on Wyndham Street. We were duped into thinking the long-awaited renovation was actually a new place, but lo and behold it has risen again.

A cool new bar called Tivo is open at 43-55 Wyndham St., 2116-8055. It joins newcomer Wagyu of the Jaspas group and Solas bar as one of the new trendsetters on the newly hip street.

Nobu is finally taking reservations and believe me, you’d better book early as the hype has been in full swing for months. It’s at the InterContinenal Hong Kong in the former location of Yu seafood restaurant on the second floor. Call 2313-2323 and take your chances. Good luck!

The Pemberton Building on Bonham Strand, Sheung Wan has opened a hip new French restaurant called Bonheur (22-26 Bonham Strand East). Call 2544-6333 for reservations.

Did you know that the Arc Brasserie on Wo On Lane is no more? In its place is Chili & Lemon Thai restaurant and bar.

While I’m not really a big dessert buff since my three-year stint as a pastry chef during my apprenticeship (you have to taste everything – sounds great, but you get a little sugared out after your 1,000 crème brulee). But as a cheese lover, I was happy to see that Tiffin at the Grand Hyatt is now doing a European cheese platter for just $168 (tack on another $60 and let loose on their famed dessert buffet). It’s actually a hell of a deal, as the buffet alone is $180 during the week and $198 Fri-Sat. Grand Hyatt Hotel Wan Chai, 2588-1234.

The Indian buffet I told you about at McSorley’s Ale House is at the Discovery Bay location, not (sadly) at the Elgin Street venue. It’s 10 main dishes plus the usual extras for $128 including a beer or wine.
