Voodoo Made Easy

Polly Wong is the head of the Hong Kong branch of Ethnic Voodoo. She also practices Voodoo, which has been around in Africa since the beginning of civilization. But it doesn’t take a specialist to practice the ancient art. Apparently, it’s as simple as buying a doll.

Voodoo Made Easy

HK Magazine: Voodoo is generally considered a form of Black magic. What do you think of that?
Polly Wong:
Most people have the misconception that Voodoo is about spell casting and symbolic killing. However, that’s only 30 per cent of the truth! At least 70 per cent of Voodoo is for good luck. Voodoo dolls can provide protection and blessings. We want to spread the positive side of Voodoo.

HK: Can you tell me the functions of some of your dolls?
PW:
We have over 70 different dolls so I can name a few. The Hip-Hop Boy increases confidence and style. The Devil actually protects us from harm. The Aladdin collection brings us good luck and The Genie can make people’s wishes come true. Captain Hook and Chinese Lucky Boy increase wealth and Harry Potter makes our wishes come true.

HK: What will happen if I buy a doll and stick needles in it?
PW:
You will feel better because it serves is an outlet for repressed anger and discontent, but you may achieve the same effect by punching hard on a pillow.

HK: If there were one person in the world that you would like to curse, who would it be?
PW:
My ex-boyfriend who betrayed me would be my first target. I don’t hate him now but I wouldn’t mind seeing him miserable either. I may use a Dark Boy Voodoo doll on him. The mere thought of revenge makes me feel so evil - in a good way.

HK: What is the ultimate revenge tool?
PW:
I would use the Frankenstein Voodoo doll to block peoples’ minds, especially those I don’t like. It’d make them think slower and become unproductive. What’s worse than getting stupid all of a sudden without knowing why?

HK: Have you ever made someone fall in love with you with Voodoo?
PW:
No, I was in a stable relationship even before I learned about Voodoo, so I haven’t tried to, and I don’t need to. But I use Voodoo to nourish my relationships, making them good and stable ones. There are a few cases where it’s worked with my friends, I gave them Little Cupid, or I+U=WE or Heart Robber dolls and they fell in love very soon after. Many of our customers came back to our store and told us similar stories.
