Shoes and Suits

Made a few resolutions to know a thing or two about men’s fashion? Natasha Stokes gives some pointers on picking the right shoes for your suit.

Going to a wedding or gala ball? Shinier materials usually indicate a dressier shoe, as do less bulky heels and soles. For a very formal event, match the elegance of your suit with a more pointy-toed shoe. 1Glossy leather shoe $2,480 by Agnes b.

Loafers go well with casual pants, but note the particular style of the shoe as ornamental decorations like tassels (2Black loafers $4,700 by Zegna from Lane Crawford ) or buckles are a little on the dressy side, while heavy stitching or patterned leather (3Black loafers with tassels $3,600 by Zegna from Lane Crawford) is a little more on the casual side.

Inside this shiny shell beats the heart of a sneaker. If wearing suit shoes infringes on your personality, compromise with this bi-genre shoe. 4Glossy sneaker $560 by Underground from I.T.

The Rules

➔ Pick a shoe that matches, or is darker than your pants.
➔ Think of your socks as you would a tie – an item to bring the whole outfit together. For example, although matching socks and shoes is a safe bet, a bright blue sock peeking out of a gray ensemble makes for a zany, stylish finish.
➔ If wearing a belt, match your shoes to it, unless of course, your belt is some multi-colored striped affair.
