Ghosttalk (part one of three): The Spellman
When you’ve tried every seduction trick in the book but you just can’t seem to bag the man of your dreams, head to Master Fong, a Taoist magician who specializes in casting love spells.
HK Magazine: How did you become a Spellman?
Master Fong: I've been interested in spells, a form of Taoist magic, since I was very young. I learned from a master when I was 12 and started teaching when I was about 26.
HK: How do you cast a spell?
MF: Spell casting in Chinese is called “Gong-tau.” It means something like “spell fallen on one’s head.” To cast a spell, you need the “fu” and the “chau.” The “fu” is basically a piece of yellow paper with written words or drawings. These are usually requests that one makes to different gods. The “chau” is the spoken spell. The common one is the “Gup-gup-yu-lut-ling” but there are a bunch of others.
HK: What kinds of spells are available?
MF: There are lots. You choose one according to circumstances. If the target is living overseas or far away, you can choose the “flying spell”; if you can have direct contact with the person, you can choose the “blood spell.” For the “ blood spell,” we mix black ink with human or animal blood and use it to write on some food, plants or on the “fu.” You then have to find a way to get your target to eat the food or have contact with the object to unleash the power of the spell. For the “fu,” you mix ash with the food or drink.
HK: What is the difference between using animal and human blood?
MF: Different bloods have different functions. For example, if you want to cast a spell against people, you need the blood of snake. To exorcise or drive away evil spirits, you need the blood of a chicken or a black dog.
HK: How do you cast a love spell?
MF: To cast a love spell, I need the target’s name, photo, home address and his location at the moment. I also need something he has touched like his hair or his nails. I also need the name and the photo of my client. Usually, it takes ten days for the spell to take effect.
HK: What kinds of clients do you have? Have you had any successful cases?
MF: I have all sorts of different clients: Westerners, local, gays and bisexuals. Most of them are local but I have got some foreigner clients too. Two-thirds of my clients are women. The youngest client is only 15-years-old. Once a gay client of mine asked me to cast a love spell because he fell in love with a straight guy. So I helped him and now they are living together, although the guy still refuses to marry him.
