The Origin of Pizza

1-MIN READ1-MIN

In 1889, a local pizza maker named Raffaele Esposito of Naples baked a pizza for queen Margherita of Savoy. The colors of the pizza represented the Italian flag: green (basil), white (mozzarella), and red (tomatoes). Voila, the birth of the margherita. Speculations from pizza experts say that the pizza’s popularity is rooted in the post-World War II era when soldiers returned from service in Italy. Now, pizza is being made all over the world, and each country gives it a local spin. Kimchi pizza is popular in Korea, Canadian bacon one of the most popular in Canada, and in America it’s cheese, cheese and more cheese – which they don’t do at all in Italy.
